The W&DW Annual Congress, celebrated in Moscow, Russian Federation, March 25th to 27th, not only gathered Authors from around the world, but was also the planning framework for the objectives that the representatives of the international Alliances FESAAL, W&DW and APASER have outlined to sign an understanding memorandum for collaboration, cooperation and reference.

After signing the document, W&DW (Europe), FESAAL (Latin America) and APASER (Africa) have the first goal of mutual aid, collaboration and cooperation, in order to provide knowhow to Authors in the countries where the societies operate, countries that still don’t have management societies, and are faced with the need to create them to defend their rights. This “how to” path is strengthened by the possibility of financial aid, that will definitely be necessary in the beginning, together with the strategic political support needed for countries to have laws to regulate and endorse the rights of Creators, such as filmmakers, screenwriters and playwrights.

Throughout the years, these international Alliances have definitely proved that the collective of Authors and their resources applied to aiding emergent societies have been successful, as in the cases of DASC (Colombia), GEDAR, DBCA (Brazil) and ATN (Chile) that today can rely on laws to defend their rights: Act Pepe Sánchez (Colombia) and Act Ricardo Larraín (Chile); and also with international support, and solvency in their own management, which allows them to start this year with the preparations to begin collection and distribution of rights among their Authors.

This important step towards international collaboration implies that authors’ rights are a global commodity, an indisputable right, and that they help countries with functioning management societies to have, in the future, mutual covenants of collection around the world.
